Founded in 1976 as a grassroots project in a Georgia community farm, Habitat for Humanity has grown to encompass more than 70 countries where 59 million people have used “sweat equity” to improve their housing. Along the way Habitat has partnered with several large companies, notably State Farm Insurance, which provided $820,000 in grants to young people in 2024 to help fulfill its mission of affordable housing.
The insurance company has supported youth Habitat chapters and young professionals and donated $3.2 million to these efforts since 2007. In 2023, State Farm enabled the involvement of over 3,000 from this group.
Also receiving funds in 2024 was Habitat Strong, Habitat’s initiative to build homes that better withstand hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and other natural disasters. Going beyond the usual building code requirements, Habitat Strong encourages the use of more durable materials and sustainable construction techniques, as well as informing disaster-prone communities of preventive, volunteer-friendly methods of protecting homes. These advances incorporate the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s FORTIFIED standards.
